SWIMCLUB UPDATE

The October Long Course meet is on next Friday, October 20 at 6.30pm!

WHO WILL BE SWIMMER OF THE YEAR ?

Following the last of the short course club meets on September 15, the winner of the 2006 Swimmer of the Year award will be awarded at the conclusion of racing next week. The contest was very close leading up to the last of the monthly meets, so be there to see who wins the big prize ! There are at least 3 boys and at least 3 girls who are very much in the running to gain this award, which is awarded to one boy and one girl.

The 2006 / 2007 season kicks off next week with the first of the Long Course club nights. Please try and be there by 6.00pm so that we can get all the entries put into the computer in time for a 6.30 start - it will also give some time for the swimmers to do a bit of a warm up.

The club had some outstanding results achieved by both our senior and junior squads at the Eastern Suburbs Swimming Association District meets earlier this year - full results are set out below.

Our head coach, Steve Garner, is organising the racing calendar for the very busy racing season leading up to Christmas. The key events will be the carnivals run by the district association we belong to, Eastern Suburbs Swimming Association, or ESSA. They will be running 3 carnivals over a series of Saturday afternoons - they will only take a couple of hours and our club is looking to send a strong squad, including all our leading senior swimmers. The carnivals all start at 2.00pm on Saturday October 21 and 28 and November 11. They will be fantastic fun and great for everyone's racing, so put the dates in your diary ! . See below for more details. Entries close on October 12.

Club AGM

The notice of meeting for the club's AGM will be sent out shortly. For the last two years the club has been run by the hard work of 3 people and as one of them will be retiring at the AGM, and another will be scaling back on his involvement, it is time for other parents to step up to help. Helping on club race nights (doing timekeeping etc) is really appreciated, but we now need at least 3 people to offer to actually help run the club. It is not a lot of work, but it does require a level of commitment over the next twelve months.

The club is a fantastic way for kids to get fit and get used to racing in a friendly and supportive environment. Club race nights are also a lot of fun for both parents and the swimmers. The club is a crucial pathway for kids to move from nervous and unskilled swimmers to confident and successful racers. The club has already seen one of its members, over a two year period, develop from a highly nervous and very unfit swimmer to a finalist at the National Age Championships. This club is really important from the kids perspective.

However, it cannot function without parental support and that support is needed now. If it is not going to be there, then the Friday night race meets just cannot happen, and the club will exist only as a group of (generally older) swimmers who will attend external race meets under the guidance of our head coach, Steve Garner.

Please seriously consider putting your hand up - it involves one meeting a month, a few hours additional work a month, and taking a leading role in running the Friday night club meets. It is not that hard, particularly when it involves such good things for your child !

The club needs parental support both financially and in running its operation - without that support we will lose the club as we now know it.

OVER TO YOU !

Computerised results

We have a computerised race system which gives us all of the results straight after the meet concludes. These and other results are published on our website and can be viewed at Results.

Club BBQ

The barbeque will again be operating on Friday nights from 6.45pm, with the complimentary champagne, beer and wine again available to all parents and support crew. Remember that brothers and sisters of the swimmers have free entry so they can enjoy all the facilities of the centre, and have a delicious dinner, while the Race Squad battle out the point score placings!

ESSA Carnival Results

Earlier this year a squad of 7 swimmers represented the club at the Eastern Suburbs Swimming Association winter carnivals. From our club swam Sammy Annear, Daniel Leech, Tom Mahony, Samantha Marshall, Anneliese McGee-Collett, James Medway and Emma Radford.

They did the club proud, with some spectacular PB's and 1 new ESSA record. Sammy Annear did a 2.2 second PB in the 100m breastroke, Tom Mahony did a 2.4 second PB in the same race, and James Medway won his 100m backstroke by 11 seconds. In addition Samantha Marshall broke the district record in the 50m breastroke.

However the standout performance was by 10 year old Daniel Leech who did a 6 second PB in the 100m backstroke, a 9 second PB in the 50m fly and a staggering 23 second PB in the 100m freestyle. All that squad work is obviously paying off !

Congratulations to all of the swimmers !

ESSA Summer Carnivals

Our head coach has selected a squad of 14 swimmers to represent the club at the forthcoming Summer ESSA carnivals. Each of Luke, Popi, Doris, Daniel, Cameron, Will, Tom, Sam, Lilly, Josie, James, Samantha, Nicole and Emma have been contacted by Steve to determine which races they are swimming in.

If you have not yet been contacted, and would like to join your fellow club racers in what is a great series of carnivals, please reply to this email or speak to Steve ASAP - entries close tomorrow, October 12.

The meets all start at 2pm on Saturday October 21, October 28 and November 11 at UNSW pool. They only take a few hours, and are a fantastic way to get racing experience and confidence in a really fun and supportive team environment. Give it a go !
