SWIMCLUB UPDATE

Race Night is happening again on Friday,
May 19!

Why not bring a friend?

Our next club race night is on next week and after this meeting we will be reverting to a monthly race calendar for the rest of the winter season. We will have a Monthly Championship up to and including September.

Congratulations to both James Medway and Samantha Marshall who are the Club Champions for 2006 after each scored 5 wins at the recent Club Championships (see report further below). Further congratulations and bouquets to Samantha who represented the club at the recent Australian Age Championships at Homebush. Sam swam a 6 second PB in the 100m breastroke at the Metropolitan Championships in March (where she finished a very close 3rd) and thus qualified for the Nationals. Sam then swam a 2.5 second PB in the heats of the Nationals to qualify for the finals and then swam a further 0.5 second PB (clocking 1.17.57) in the final that evening to be the 8th fastest Australian girl in that event. Sam is the first club representative to reach this level, and bearing in mind that only 6 months earlier she was swimming 1.30 for that event it was a terrific effort and a just reward for a lot of awfully hard work. It also shows what excellent coaching staff we have at Cook &Phillip - well done Steve and Martin !

The first of the external meets is on Sunday, 28th of May at Maroubra and entries close on May 14 - the club is sending a squad and if you would like to be considered please contact either Steve Garner or Nish Annear (simply "reply" to this email) ASAP.

Results from Club Race Night May 5

The whole ethos of our swim club is that achieving a PB in competition and continuing to improve is just as important to our young swimmers as actually winning a race. The results of our swimmers at the last few club meets (particularly on March 10 where 43 PB's were set) shows just how dramatically our swimmers are improving their performances, while learning how to race and enjoying it at the same time.

On May 5 our swimmers broke 9 PB's, so huge congratulations to the following athletes who achieved them:

Aiden Brown (2), Sammy Annear, Michael Murphy, Tom Mahony (2), Samantha Marshall, Caroline Oayda (by 5 seconds !), and Miriam Carr

Results from Club Long Course Championships held on April 2

We had a near record turn-out of swimmers for the Clubs annual Long Course Championships held before the school holidays. Some outstanding performances were achieved, with 26 PB's achieved. Standouts were Tom Mahony with an 8 second PB in the 200m IM, Aiden Brown chopping off over 7 seconds in the 50m breastroke, and Sammy Annear almost 13 seconds in the 100m freestyle.

However the Championships are determined by the fastest swimmers on the night in their age categories. Mia Portelli did brilliantly with 1 gold and 5 silvers to finish second in the girls. However Samantha Marshall with 5 gold medals claimed the title.

Similarly, Alexander Webb starred with 4 gold's and one silver as did both Tom Mahony (2 gold and 2 silver) and Sammy Annear (2 gold and 1 silver). However it was not enough to catch James medway who won 5 gold medals against some very stiff competition.

Well done Samantha and James !

Club BBQ

The barbeque will again be operating on Friday nights from 6.45pm, with the complimentary champagne, beer and wine again available to all parents and support crew. Remember that brothers and sisters of the swimmers have free entry so they can enjoy all the facilities of the centre, and have a delicious dinner, while the Race Squad battle out the point score placings!

Swimmer of the Year

The competition for Swimmer of the Year is based on each swimmers performances throughout the year at club race nights, with a PB counting for 4 points, a near PB for 3, being within 1 second is worth 2 points and for each race entered 1 point is earned. The competition is hotting up, with a number of swimmers staking their claim to the title, with some particularly big moves amongst the girls. After including the results of the recent Long Course Championship (where only the best 3 of each swimmers results were counted for this particular competition so as not to disadvantage younger competitors who swam in less races on that day) and last Friday's race meet the standings are as follows :

BOYS: Tom Mahony 132; Aidan Brown 124; Sammy Annear 119; Jack Gerbec 95; Oliver Schaffer 88; James Ekins 80; Robert Murphy 69; Michael Murphy 63; James Vineburg 62. Luke Aldous 59

GIRLS: Popy Aldous 110; Samantha Marshall 103 : Beatrice Hosie 100; Kelsey Gerbec 91; Mikayla Gerbec 84; Rosie Carr 49* ;Ali Gazal 49*; Morena Hosie 49* ; Miriam Carr 43 ; Mia Portelli 41

Note that the complete list is on our web site.

Gym Membership

A reminder that the centre has a very modern, fully equipped gym, and they have agreed that exclusively for our club there is now a 25% discount on ANY gym membership for Swim Club members' immediate family.

Computerised results

We have a computerised race system which gives us all of the results straight after the meet concludes. These and other results are published on our website and can be viewed at Results.

Membership fees for 2005/06 are now overdue and swimmers need to join or renew to swim at the next meet . There are very serious insurance issues if a swimmer races in our club without being financial. Accordingly we have to insist that each swimmer is paid up before being allowed to compete. Go to the website at www.cpswimclub.info to download the application form from the fees page. Failing that see Nish - the man behind the desk at race nights.
