SWIMCLUB UPDATE

Good luck to all our racers at the Speedo Sprints tomorrow night !

Our club is sending a fit and enthusiastic team to the Speedo Sprint series tomorrow night, so good luck to all of them ! Details of times, programs and where to go are contained in this newsletter.

Remember that our next club race night is on Friday week (February 24) with racing starting at 6.30pm. Racing should be over by around 7.45pm. Our first race night for 2006 that was held last Friday produced some excellent performances and full details, with photos, will be in next weeks newsletter. If you can't wait, we have a computerised race system which gives us all of the results straight after the meet concludes. These and other results are published on our website and can be viewed at Results.

For next Friday please try and make sure you get to the centre by 6.15pm to warm up and to finish registration by 6.25pm. As always, the BBQ will be operating for hungry swimmers and their families and there will also be free beer and wine for the parents. Any donations of beer and wine will be greatly appreciated.

SLC AQUADOT CARNIVAL

Last Sunday 3 of the clubs stronger swimmers, accompanied by 2 squad members went to the SLC Aquadot carnival at Sutherland. This is the home club of Ian Thorpe and his coach is the head coach there so it was likely to be pretty hot competition.

Samantha Marshall, Oliver Schaffer and James Medway competed in 13 races, and between them achieved 10 PB's, which can only be described as spectacular and a credit to them and their coach, Steve Garner. Sam won 3 golds and 2 silvers, James 3 golds and a silver and Ollie (swimming in the 14 and over category, which as a 14 year old, is pretty hard work !) got a silver and 3 PB's. Well done team !

Steve Garner - an opinion from a "swimming dad"

Almost exactly a year ago, our daughter, Samantha finally pursuaded us that she was serious about her swimming, and was prepared to put in the "hard yards" in training. In turn, we agreed to fully support her, pay for squad training and try and become morning people (this was not an easy transition !).

This time last year Sam, aged twelve, joined Steve Garner's morning squads and spent the next month going up and down the lanes trying to keep up with the junior squad - these were all kids quite a lot younger than her, fitter than her, and in some cases, faster than her.

Steve spent that month watching and assessing her, and regularly spoke to all of us about what was required to become a good, even if not great, swimmer. He stressed that talent was probably only 10% of the story - her mental attitude and her willingness to work hard were the key things needed. It needs to be understood that at this time Sam was just one of a number of new kids in the squads and had not really shown any obvious potential.

Over the next six months Sam's times barely improved, but she kept at it, working to a carefully thought out and structured program. Suddenly in late October it all started to come together and under Steve's expert tuition and a very professionally designed program Sam is now working hard to qualify for the National Age Championships in April. She may or may not make it - however her being able to aim that high does demonstrate what extraordinary progress she has made in 12 months.

We are certainly very proud of her, and of how hard she has worked. However the key ingredient was the fact that the head coach of the centre, Steve Garner, had the professionalism to take her aspirations seriously when she was just another kid in the squad, had the expertise to design and manage a program that has worked beyond any of our expectations, and had the temperament to keep the whole thing calm and (most of the time !) good fun for Sam. His level of support was certainly well beyond anything we could have expected.

I am not sure that everyone appreciates just how good a coach Steve is - an awful lot of what Sam has and is achieving can be put down to him. If a family has a swimmer in the same position as Sam was in 6 or 12 months ago, and if that swimmer is prepared to put in the hard work, then with Steve on your side anything is possible.

Race Program for the Speedo Sprint series, tomorrow night, Friday 17th February

Racing is scheduled to start at 7.00pm so our Head Coach, Steve Garner, requires you to be at the Canterbury Aquatic Centre by 6.30pm. for warm-ups and racing tips ! The address is Tasker Park, Phillips Avenue. Canterbury next to the ice skating rink - coming from the city, turn right off Canterbury Road into Wonga then right into Phillips (see map attached), phone number is 9789.9303 . We will be swimming in a 50m open pool although there is a grandstand providing some shelter. Look for the club banner ! The centre's kiosk will be open, and there is free parking at the front of the centre.

The program has individual categories across the 4 strokes (no IM) for swimmers aged 8 and under, and then separate categories for 9, 10, 11, 12 and 13 years. Age is at 18th February. All races are 50m and racing commences at 7pm with the 8 & under breaststroke, followed sequentially by the other age groups. After the breaststroke comes the backstroke, then the butterfly and then the freestyle. The race meet should be over by 9.00pm.

First and second in each category will qualify for the finals at the Olympic pool at Homebush on Sunday March 12.

Tomorrow night remember to wear your (white) club T shirt, and "Go C & P !"

Fees due

Membership fees for 2005/06 are now overdue and swimmers need to join or renew to swim at the next meet on Friday, 3 February. There are very serious insurance issues if a swimmer races in our club without being financial. Accordingly we have to insist that each swimmer is paid up before being allowed to compete. Go to the website at www.cpswimclub.info to download the application form from the fees page. Failing that see Nish - the man behind the desk at race nights.

Club BBQ

The barbeque will again be operating on Friday nights from 6.45pm, with the complimentary champagne, beer and wine again available to all parents and support crew. Remember that brothers and sisters of the swimmers have free entry so they can enjoy all the facilities of the centre, and have a delicious dinner, while the Race Squad battle out the point score placings!

Gym Membership

A reminder that the centre has a very modern, fully equipped gym, and they have agreed that exclusively for our club there is now a 25% discount on ANY gym membership for Swim Club members' immediate family.

Computerised results

We have a computerised race system which gives us all of the results straight after the meet concludes. These and other results are published on our website and can be viewed at Results.
