UPDATE |
| The July Monthly Club Championship is on this Friday July 21 at 6.30 pm ! Our next club race night, and the second of our Monthly Championships in the winter series, is on at the end of this week, with further championships on August 18th and September 22nd. Put all these in the diary, as there are only these three race meets available to establish who the "Swimmer of the Year" will be. Please try and be there by 6.00pm so that we can get all the entries put into the computer in time for a 6.30 start - it will also give some time for the swimmers to do a bit of a warm up. The club had some outstanding results achieved by 2 of the senior swimmers over the last few weeks, and a report on this is set out below. Well done Samantha Marshall and James Messenger ! A squad of junior swimmers will be representing our
club at the first of the Eastern Suburbs district meets on Sunday July
30 - this will be held at the Des Renford Aquatic centre, Maroubra at
12.00 noon. Entries close this Saturday, July 22nd. In addition the
club is sending both a Junior and Senior squad to the Eastern Suburbs
district meet on Saturday August 12 (same venue and starting time) and
entries close on August 5. Please let either your coaches (Steve and
Martin) or Nish (phone 0412.235.622 or just reply to this email) know
ASAP if you are available and would like to compete. |
Swimmer of the Year The competition for Swimmer of the Year is based on each swimmers performances throughout the year at club race nights, with a PB counting for 4 points, a near PB for 3, being within 1 second is worth 2 points and for each race entered 1 point is earned. Congratulations to Samantha Marshall, Gold Medal winner and Metropolitan Champion in the 100m Breastroke ! The Sydney Metropolitan Championships were held in early July at Olympic park, and Cook + Phillip Swim Club were represented by Samantha Marshall. She had been training hard under head coach Steve Garner, and all the hard work paid off with Sam winning the gold medal in the 13 years 100 metre breastroke with a new PB of 1.16.72. She also swam a PB in the Open 50 metre breastroke and came 5th which was a huge effort as she was swimming against girls a lot older than her (including one who was in the Commonwealth Games). Well done Sam, and also congratulations to head coach Steve Garner who has coordinated her program. Sam's next big race is the NSW Open Championships in early August where
she will swim the 50 and 100 metre breastroke. Following her reaching the finals at the National Championships Samantha Marshall and head coach Steve garner were invited by Swimming NSW to participate at the Age development Camp. Steve reports as follows : " Sam and I (and 66 other National finalists and some coaches)
arrived at NSWIS Narrabeen mid arvo on Friday. After some welcoming
and orientation procedures we had a most engaging lecture on Sport Psychology
focusing on some fundamental principles such as a 1% improvement can
make a world of difference. 6pm -7.30pm was our first pool session at
Warringah Aquatic. A difficult set geared mostly for free stylers so
Sam and the other form strokers were under pressure immediately. Good
or bad? Ask Sam. Saturday started with a run and stretching followed
by and aerobic set (am) and a lecture on Nutrition and a heart rate
set (pm). I was with the female Breastroke who responded superbly to
a very taxing set. Sam had some back trouble so she was unable to complete
the set. On Sunday we had a mini meet. Samantha showed her determination
and talent by recording the fastest 100m b/s time for all the girls
with a PB 1.15 low. She also did well in the freestyle skins and the
relay events. A great weekend and we both gained heaps out of the experience." |
Congratulations to James Messenger, trophy winner at Kurri Kurri regional meet ! James represented our club and competed last week in
the Special Olympics Hunter Valley Regional SHORT COURSE Swim Meet at
Kurri Kurri and swam particularly well to win the following : ESSA Development Squad We were invited by the Eastern Suburbs Swimming Association to participate in their development squad that was held in the second week of the July school holidays from 10 July to 13 July (Monday to Thursday). Congratulations to Aidan Brown, Sammy Annear, Tom Mahony, Daniel Leach, and Beatrice Hosie who distinguished themselves and did the club proud. ESSA camp went really well according to Martin, senior coach at Cook & Phillip. It was well organised with a high level of coaching and loads of enthusiasm and application from the swimmers. Martin took the Fly workshop on the Tuesday and ran a lot of the stretching sessions. There were also lectures on nutrition and other aspects of competition. After all the hard work they competed at the SLC Aquadot Carnival on Saturday the 15th July at the Olympic Aquatic Centre at Homebush. Detailed results are not yet to hand but they will be in the next newsletter - apparently a large number of PB's were set which is terrific ! Cool Camps for Kids fitness training Please support our friends at Cool Camps for Kids. They are now conducting health and fitness sessions Mon, Wed, and Frid at 4pm during the school term and more details can be found at www.coolcamps.com.au Club BBQ The barbeque will again be operating on Friday nights from 6.45pm, with the complimentary champagne, beer and wine again available to all parents and support crew. Remember that brothers and sisters of the swimmers have free entry so they can enjoy all the facilities of the centre, and have a delicious dinner, while the Race Squad battle out the point score placings! Gym Membership Membership fees for 2005/06 are now overdue and swimmers need to join or renew to swim at the next meet . There are very serious insurance issues if a swimmer races in our club without being financial. Accordingly we have to insist that each swimmer is paid up before being allowed to compete. Go to the website at www.cpswimclub.info to download the application form from the fees page. Failing that see Nish - the man behind the desk at race nights. |
