SWIMCLUB UPDATE

First Race Night for 2006 is on next week on Friday, February 3 at 6.30pm

Why not bring a friend?

Try and make sure you get to the centre by 6.15pm to warm up and register by 6.25pm. As always, the BBQ usually gets going by 6.45pm for hungry swimmers and their family.

Welcome back everybody for what promises to be a very busy and exciting 2006. Our first club race night for 2006 is on Friday, 3rd of February with racing starting at 6.30pm. The calendar for the next few months is extremely busy, culminating in the Australian Age Championships at Sydney Olympic Park in late April. The club does have swimmers aiming to qualify for this meet, which demonstrates just how far our club has progressed in the last twelve months, and how our swimmers are now aiming "for the stars" under the expert guidance of our head coach, Steve Garner.

There are also 2 other important meets coming up, the Speedo Sprint Series in mid February and the Sydney Metropolitan Championships in early March. We expect to have record numbers of club swimmers at both these meets. Steve has carefully selected other lead-up meets prior to these "blue ribbon" events so that all swimmers have every opportunity to qualify for these top-level meets as well as getting "tuned up" for the all important school swim meets. Full details of the forthcoming meets are in this newsletter.

Sans Souci Summer Meet

Late last year a team of 9 swimmers represented the club at the Sans Souci Summer Meet. On a beautiful sunny day they performed excellently, achieving 12 PB's against some very tough opposition. Particular congratulations to Oliver Schaffer who achieved 3 PB's, including a memorable 10 second PB in the 200m IM. From our clubs perspective the swimmer of the meet was Samantha Marshall, who swam in 6 races, achieved 5 PB's and won 3 gold medals in the 50m, 100m and 200m breastroke. She was swimming the 200m breastroke for the first time, and smashed the State qualifying time by nearly 4 seconds. Look out Liesel Jones !

Congratulations also to Mia Portelli (a PB in the 50m breastroke and a very close 4th in the 50m backstroke), Emma Radford (silver medal in the 50m fly) and Tom Wright (silver in the 50m free).

November Club Swim Meets

While it seems a long time ago now, November was a very big month for our swimmers in our two race nights.

On the race night held on November 11, 7 club records were broken, and 17 PB's were set, which was a terrific performance. Congratulations to Mia Portelli (9 years 25m butterfly), Tom Mahony (9 years 25m butterfly), Tom Wright (8 years 25m breastroke), Zoe Gomez (9 years 25m freestyle), Robert Murphy (8 years 25 freestyle) and Samantha Marshall (open 50m freestyle and open 50m butterfly) who all set new club records. Congratulations also to Popy Aldous, Kelsey Gerbec, Tom Mahony (3), Samantha Marshall (2), Claire Raper (2), Finley Wright, Mia Portelli, Eleanor Raper, Jack Gerbec, Caroline Oayda, Jade Garrett, Luke Aldous, and Sammy Annear who all set PB's.

In the November 25 meet, 31 PB's were set, which was an outstanding result. Great performances were put in by a number of swimmers, with 9 achieving multiple PB's. Congratulations to Kelsey Gerbec (3), Mikayla Gerbec (2), Jack Gerbec (2), Ollie Schaffer, Tom Mahony (4) , Emily Moss, Robert Murphy (4) , Michael Murphy (3), James Ekins (2), Harry Moss (2), Luke Aldous, Marcello Polia (2), Aidan Brown (3) and Jade Garrett.

Swimmer of the Month - November

With all these great performances, achieving Swimmer of the Month was going to be something to be very proud of. With a wonderful achievement of 7 PB's out of the 8 club races he competed in during November, Tom Mahony came up trumps. Well done Tom - a great way to finish off 2005!

Congratulations to Tom Mahony!

Summer racing program

Our swim club is sending a team to the following swim meets, to both hone those racing skills and to set qualifying times for the upcoming Metropolitan and National Age Championships. They are also perfect for getting ready for the school swim carnivals most of which are held over the next few months. Please speak to Steve Garner (phone : 0416.243.656)or email Nish (or phone : 0412.235.622) if you would like to be considered for inclusion in the squad. Representing our club at these external meets is organised by our head coach, Steve Garner, who will assess each swimmers fitness, skills level and attitude at training before including anyone in the club race team.

Speedo Sprint Series: the heats are on Saturday 18th February at 3pm at the University of NSW pool with the finals at Sydney Olympic Park on Sunday March 12. Entries close on February 10th. Note that this is restricted to swimmers aged 13 and under. This is a state wide competition and is a lot of fun. Entries have to go through the club and you must be a registered, paid-up member.

Eastwood Epping Open Carnival : Sunday 26th February, starting at 9.00am. Entries close on February 12. This is perfect for tuning up for the school carnivals and for working on qualifying for the Metropolitan Championships.

Fees due

Membership fees for 2005/06 are now overdue and swimmers need to join or renew to swim at the next meet on Friday, 3 February. There are very serious insurance issues if a swimmer races in our club without being financial. Accordingly we have to insist that each swimmer is paid up before being allowed to compete. Go to the website at www.cpswimclub.info to download the application form from the fees page. Failing that see Nish - the man behind the desk at race nights.

Club BBQ

The barbeque will again be operating on Friday nights from 6.45pm, with the complimentary champagne, beer and wine again available to all parents and support crew. Remember that brothers and sisters of the swimmers have free entry so they can enjoy all the facilities of the centre, and have a delicious dinner, while the Race Squad battle out the point score placings!

Gym Membership

A reminder that the centre has a very modern, fully equipped gym, and they have agreed that exclusively for our club there is now a 25% discount on ANY gym membership for Swim Club members' immediate family.

Computerised results

We have a computerised race system which gives us all of the results straight after the meet concludes. These and other results are published on our website and can be viewed at Results.

Congratulations James Messenger !

James represented the club at the D Sport Hunter Region Swim Meet at Cessnock on the 18th of December. He swam in 4 races, achieved 4 PB's , and in the process got a 4th place, a bronze medal, a silver medal and the gold medal in the IM. Fantastic stuff !.
