COOK +PHILLIP SWIM CLUB

Don't miss out - The clubs first interstate State Championships!

As many of you may know, our club is sending a squad of (mainly younger) swimmers to the Tasmanian State Short Course Championships. These are being held from Saturday September 8 to Monday the 10th inclusive.

We already have 11 confirmed starters and very excited they are too ! We are in the process of organising club back packs and club T shirts. These will be available at cost. We are also organising those large (very warm !) swimming parka's - they are not cheap (around $100) but they are fantastic for the colder months and Tasmania in September is really very cold ! Everything will be embroidered with the club logo and "Cook & Phillip Race Team - Tasmanian State Championships 2007"

It will be a fantastic weekend for parents and swimmers alike - a seriously valuable experience and major motivation for the swimmers and it should be a lot of fun for the parents. Please think seriously about joining the rest of the team in coming to Tasmania - entry times are not onerous and the flights are not expensive when booked well in advance. We are also close to finalising affordable accommodation near the pool.

Entries close near the end of August, but this sort of high level race meeting does require both organisation and some pretty serious commitment on the training side. All swimmers going to Tasmania also need to get official NSW Swimming times if they have not been previously achieved. Swimmers 11 years and under do not need to make a qualifying time to swim the 50 metre events but still need to have an official NSW registered time ie you have to compete and record a time at a recognised meet - that's why the forthcoming Blacktown meet (see below) is important to attend. Note that all 100m times need to be under the Tasmanian qualifying time for that discipline (also see below) but they are not difficult.

Finally, remember the next club race night is on Friday, July 20!

Meeting to discuss the Tasmanian trip

A short meeting to discuss the trip is being held in the cafe at 6.00pm on Friday 20 July at Cook and Phillip. This is just before the club race night, which starts at 6.30pm. All people who either are interested or may become interested should attend to discuss accommodation, air travel (if not already booked ), vehicle arrangements in Tasmania,
itinerary and so on. Head Coach Steve Garner will be accompanying the team and he and committee members will be at the meeting to answer any questions you may have.

CONTACTS

In the interim;

  • to discuss or confirm (swimmers) availability, ring Head Coach Steve Garner on 0416.243.656
  • to discuss gear, ring David Marshall on 0416.178.547
  • for airfares, we suggest you book a flight on the internet, as it appears to be cheaper than the club trying to do a block booking through an agent - need to fly down on Friday (maybe take some time off school ? - it is a State Championship after all !) and fly back on Monday afternoon
  • we will shortly provide some information and suggestions on accommodation& transport.

Club BBQ

The barbeque will again be operating on Friday nights from 6.45pm, with the complimentary champagne, beer and wine again available to all parents and support crew. Remember that brothers and sisters of the swimmers have free entry so they can enjoy all the facilities of the centre, and have a delicious dinner, while the Race Squad battle out the point score placings!

Blacktown Carnival on Sunday July 29

The Blacktown Meet at SOPAC 29 July is a meet all swimmers even vaguely thinking about coming to Tasmania should attend. Entries close this Friday 13 July. Please get entries to Glenn
Annear before then - you can ring him on 0412.235.622 to discuss what events should be entered, and he can then put you (or your swimmer) on the e-entry file.

The meeting is on Sunday, July 29, at Homebush with the first race at 9.00am. Entries cost $4.50 per event and you can pay Nish this money on the Sunday.

Some of our senior swimmers (such as Samantha Marshall) will be racing on the day, so come along !
