| Don't miss out - the next club race night is on this Friday, June 15 at 6.30pm Hopefully everyone had a fun and relaxing QB long weekend. This Friday we are back into club racing with the 2006/2007 short course season continuing with a start at 6.30pm. Please try and be there by 6.00pm so that we can get all the entries put into the computer in time for a 6.30 start - it will also give some time for the swimmers to do a bit of a warm up. CONGRATULATIONS TO OUR LATEST GOLD MEDALLISTS - PETRA GOODALL AND JASPER GOODALL ! Our swimmers had fantastic results in the recent Maroubra Junior Development Carnival held on May 27. A full report appears below - with 2 gold medals, 4 silver and 3 bronze medals it was a fantastic result by our junior swimmers. We have a big squad (at least in relative terms !) of swimmers competing this coming weekend at the Sutherland Junior Championships and best of luck to Luke and Poppy Aldous, Harriet Cadell, Will Carver, Jasper and Petra Goodall, Cameron Harkins, Jade Jowett-Crociani, Tom Mahony and Mia Portelli. All these swimmers are working on getting qualifying times for the Tasmanian State Short Course Championships being held in September to which the club is sending a squad - more details below. Congratulations also to club member Samantha Marshall who was recently asked to join the NSW Institute of Sport Emerging Athletes program and who attended her first camp with NSWIS on the long weekend. Another reminder - could all parents who get this newsletter please print it out and give it to any of their children who are members of the club. An awful lot of our racers never get to see this newsletter and that can only be described as unfortunate! It really is important that they get the feedback and information contained here, so, to the printer! |
See you on Friday June
15th! |
| Maroubra Junior Development Meet The club had its biggest ever team of 17 swimmers representing the club at this meet held on May 27, and their brilliant form continued on from the ESSA championships. Our team again had wonderful results, winning 9 medals and 4 very close 4ths. This was a terrific performance, as we are one of the smallest clubs in the district. We are trying to find out what the Goodalls have for breakfast as brother and sister duo Jasper (with 1 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze) and and Petra (1 gold and 1 silver) were simply outstanding. Congratulations also to Mia Portelli (silver), Jade Jowett-Crociani (1 silver and 1 bronze), Harriet Cadell (bronze) and Tom Badger (silver). This was another terrific effort and a superb result for the swimmers, the coaches and the club. Well done everyone !! Squad News - we have a Champion in our midst ! One of the senior swimmers who trains with head coach
Steve Garner at Cook &Phillip is Alan Godfrey. What a lot of people
do not realise that although a National Open finalist in his younger days,
it is only recently that Alan has become on of the dominant swimmers in
his age division in Australia. After being ranked number 1 Masters Swimmer
in the world a few years ago, he has recently rediscovered his old form,
and this year alone he has set 9 National and 2 State Records. An ex-Olympian
friend of Alan's said way back in the ‘80’s that swimmers
can maintain their speed until about the age of 60 and with Steve's coaching
it looks like he may have another 10 years left in him ! Club BBQ The barbeque will again be operating on Friday nights from 6.45pm, with the complimentary champagne, beer and wine again available to all parents and support crew. Remember that brothers and sisters of the swimmers have free entry so they can enjoy all the facilities of the centre, and have a delicious dinner, while the Race Squad battle out the point score placings! Gym Membership Membership fees Membership fees for 2006/07 are now well overdue and swimmers who are not financial need to join or renew to swim this Friday or in this weekend's Speedo series. This is particularly the case for the swimmers participating at the Speedo Sprint series this weekend as it is an external meet. There are very serious insurance issues if a swimmer races in our club without being financial. $50 is club membership for the full year to September 30, of which $26 goes to Swimming Aust for insurance and registration. If a swimmer has a mishap while competing or training for the club, and is not a financial member of the club then that swimmer is uninsured. It is in everyone's interests that the membership dues are paid. Accordingly we have to insist that each swimmer is paid up before being allowed to compete. Go to the website at www.cpswimclub.info to download the application form from the fees page. Failing that see Nish - the man behind the desk at race nights. Computerised

TASMANIAN SHORT COURSE CHAMPIONSHIPS Our club is sending a squad to these Championships which are being held in Hobart from Saturday September 8 to Monday the 10th inclusive. As it is a genuine State Championship, the only 50m races are Open events with pretty tough qualifying standards. Thus our swimmers will only have the 100m (and longer) races to compete in. This is why these current carnivals are so important in terms of getting the times and in getting practice in swimming the longer formats. At last count we had 10 very excited young swimmers who intend going - if your child has any interest in joining in please see head coach Steve Garner as soon as possible. It really will be a fantastic, and fun filled, experience for everyone, particularly as we will be able to enter the relay events. The special team jackets that our competitors will be wearing appear to be a real attraction !. If you intend going you will need to fly down on the Friday night as the racing starts on Saturday morning at 8.30am. The race program can be down-loaded through our web site. We are encouraging people to book their own fares as the internet specials are cheaper than what we could do through an agent. We are currently checking out accommodation options. We are encouraging parent(s) to come with their child or at least have each (unaccompanied) child link up with another family they know well. The club's experience with schools is that they do not seem to have a problem with an athlete missing a day provided they are given plenty of notice, and in writing. Results from Race Night on May 18 On the 18th of May, our swimmers achieved 6 PB's which was a great result as the fields were smaller than normal. Our whole club is based not upon just winning, but on each and every swimmer improving and challenging themselves by reaching new heights. The results from the Maroubra carnival and the club race night illustrate just how well the club is going. Congratulations to the following swimmers who achieved a PB on the 18th : Mia Mahony ; Tom Mahony ;Jasper Goodall ; Lucy Vineberg ; Aiden Brown and Ethan Blumenthal. Swimmer of the Year The competition for Swimmer of the Year is based on each swimmers performances throughout the year at club race nights, with a PB counting for 4 points, a near PB for 3, being within 1 second is worth 2 points and for each race entered 1 point is earned. Following the race night on the 18th, the current "Top 5" standings are as follows: BOYS: Sammy Annear 72 ; Tom Mahony 60 Tui Ryder-Nuku 54 ; Aiden Brown 39 and Mitch Evans 36 with Jack Evans and Tom Badger are now just outside the top 5. In the girls Scarlet still holds on to first place but Lucy Vineberg is again the big mover. GIRLS: Scarlet Clark 56 : Lucy Vineberg 53 : Taneeka Johnston 48 ; Mia Mahony 41 and Emily Kass on 27. Note that the complete list is on our web site. Cool Camps for Kids fitness training Please support our friends at Cool Camps for Kids.
