COOK +PHILLIP SWIM CLUB

See you this Friday at the Club's race night!

This Friday we are back into club racing. The 2007/2008 long course season starts with our club race night on Friday and continues immediately with the SOPAC qualifying meet the next day. We have a squad of 13 swimmers competing - see below for all the details.

Please try and be at Cook & Phillip this Friday by 6.00pm so that we can get all the entries put into the computer in time for a 6.30 start - it will also give some time for the swimmers to do a bit of a warm up.

The trip to Tasmania was a huge success and some excellent results were achieved - see below for the report.

Another reminder - could all parents who get this newsletter please print it out and give it to any of their children who are members of the club. An awful lot of our racers never get to see this newsletter and that can only be described as unfortunate! It really is important that they get the feedback and information contained here, so, to the printer!

Tasmanian State Championships

Our club sent a squad of 14 (mainly younger) swimmers to the Tasmanian State Short Course Championships in September. It was a fantastic weekend for parents and swimmers alike - a seriously valuable experience with some outstanding results and 41 Personal Bests. Every swimmer swam at least one PB which is an outstanding achievement as these were the first State level meet for each and every swimmer. The (under 11) boys won the gold medal in the 4 x 50m medley relay and followed this up with a silver in the freestyle relay. The girls also starred with a silver medal in the 4 x 50m medley relay.

Congratulations also to Mia Elnekave won bronze in the under 11 fly, and Tom Mahony won bronze in the under 11 fly. Daniel Leech just missed bronze, coming 4th in the 50 fly while Rosie Carr won the B Final in the 11 and under backstroke. Special mention should also be made of Cecile Vadas who made 2 B Finals.

Overall, a wonderful effort, and an excellent time had by all - we now need to consider where we next go !

Squad News

At the start of the 2007 / 2008 Long Course season Coach Garner reflects on the tremendous results his squads have had in the 2006 / 2007 season.

"We currently have 14 School Champions from the 2006 / 2007 Summer season. In our adult squads, we have Australian champions and record holders in the Masters categories, a number of highly ranked ( top 10 ) professional Iron women and consistent top 3 finishers in various ages in the open surf races. In the juniors our squad members won 1 gold 2 silver and 2 bronze in their first outing at State level at the Tasmanian Short Course Championships. Finally in our advanced squad there is Samantha Marshall who is currently ranked only behind Leisel as the all time fastest teenager in Australia in the 100m and 200m breastroke and who swam the fastest 100m short course time in the world this year for 16yrs and under.

What a great year, and the prospects for the coming season look even better !"

All junior squad members are now required to pay $60 (as an annual fee ) to join Cook & Phillip Swim Club, which will cover them for insurance via NSW Swimming and will entitle them to race at any Friday night meet or any other club or district meet. As part of ‘Be A Sport’ squads it is believed that this is both fair and appropriate. Below is a list of the various squads. Please check your child’s grouping and book via Head Coach Steve Garner into appropriate squad times. All juniors are required to train at least 2 times per week.

SOPAC Qualifying Carnival on Saturday October 20, starting at 12.30pm

The club has a squad of 13 representatives for this important qualifying carnival to be held at Homebush. Note that the start time is 12.30pm, not the originally advertised 9.00am, and Head Coach Steve Garner wants everyone there at least 45 minutes before their race (school commitments permitting) to undertake a proper warm-up. This is a crucial opportunity to get high-level race experience and for the more advanced swimmers to attempt to qualify for the elite meets coming up over summer (primarily the Metropolitan Championships on December 15 and the State Age Championships in January).

Best of luck to Sammy Annear, Ethan Baker, Claudette Blake, Harriet Cadell, Will Carver, Jasper & Petra Goodall, Cameron Harkins, Jade Jowett-Crociani, Daniel Leech, Tom Mahony, Samantha Marshall and Cecile Vadas

2007 / 2008 Racing Program

As advised separately by Head Coach Steve Garner, it is the intention that as many as possible of the squad swimmers compete at external race carnivals to get "match fit" and to hone their racing skills. Apart from the SOPAC invitation meet (see above), the following carnivals are now on the schedule :

  • 12 yrs and under Cumberland Carnival at SOPAC on Sunday 28 October
  • St. George Invitational Inter-District Invitational Carnival at SOPAC on Saturday morning 10 November.
  • MLC Carnival at MLC School, Burwood. on Saturday afternoon 1st December.

Further details are on the club web page.
