COOK +PHILLIP SWIM CLUB

DON'T FORGET THE SECOND RACE NIGHT FOR 2007 IS ON THIS FRIDAY AT 6.30PM!

The 2006 / 2007 long course season continues with the first of this ca lender years race nights on this Friday, February 23rd. It will start at at 6.30pm. Please try and be there by 6.00pm so that we can get all the entries put into the computer in time for a 6.30 start - it will also give some time for the swimmers to do a bit of a warm up.

It will be a HUGE night, with a number of the club's senior swimmers (noting that as all things are relative, this actually refers to the older teenagers) coming along to host a relay event. Each of the clubs senior swimmers (including Metropolitan and State swimmers) will host a relay team in which younger swimmers aged 10 years or older will swim with them. It will be a 4 x 50m freestyle relay, and the club will handicap each team on the basis of each teams aggregate PB's. There will be a cash prize of $40 to the winning team ! You have to be in it to win it !

In addition there will be the famous "Dash for Cash" race at the end of the night.

Who said you have to be Ian Thorpe to make money out of swimming !!

The next club race nights are scheduled for March 9 and March 23- all are Friday nights with warm-up and registration commencing at 6.00pm and racing starting at 6.30pm.

There were also some fantastic results achieved by the clubs (younger) swimmers at both the recent Speedo series and the last club race night held on the 9th of february - details are below.

See you on Friday February 23rd!

Speedo Sprint Series

Thirteen swimmers represented the club at the Speedo Series district event that was held on february 10. This is a state-wide event and our district (Eastern Suburbs) is one of the strongest districts in the State. While none of our representatives made the finals, our club's main goal is to see our swimmers improve, and in that regard the results were spectacular.

Each swimmer can only swim 4 races, and 4 of our swimmers had no previous official time. The other 9 who did have official times previously recorded all did PB's, which is a terrific effort.

Of particular note are Popy Aldous (3 PB's with an aggregate improvement of almost 20 seconds), her brother Luke with 4 PB's, Sammy Annear with 4 PB's (one of which was 10 seconds in the 50 fly), Rosie Carr (who swam PB's in all 3 races she entered), Doris Kong (who swam PB's in all 3 races in which she had a previous official time), Emily Kass (who swam PB's in both races in which she had a previous official time) as did Will Carver, and finally Miriam Carr with 2 PB's (one resulting in a very a slick 50m free time of 31.73).

Head Coach Steve Garner was very excited by the results, and he reports as follows : The Eastern Suburbs group of clubs are among the strongest in the State and a number of swimmers will go on to win the NSW Finals at SOPAC in March. Our pre competition talk contained the message that we could be the best group of swimmers at the meet if every swimmer PB’d in a number of their swims. The young swimmers responded magnificently. Assistant Coach Ilka observed after the meet yesterday that we now have the beginnings of a great swim team. I agree.

Well done everyone - you did yourselves and your club proud !

Club BBQ

The barbeque will again be operating on Friday nights from 6.45pm, with the complimentary champagne, beer and wine again available to all parents and support crew. Remember that brothers and sisters of the swimmers have free entry so they can enjoy all the facilities of the centre, and have a delicious dinner, while the Race Squad battle out the point score placings!

Gym Membership

A reminder that the centre has a very modern, fully equipped gym, and they have agreed that exclusively for our club there is now a 25% discount on ANY gym membership for Swim Club members' immediate family.

Computerised results

We have a computerised race system which gives us all of the results straight after the meet concludes. These and other results are published on our website and can be viewed at Results.

Results from Race Night on February 9th

With 25 PB's and 2 new club records set, it was a mighty way to start the 2007 (calendar year) racing season. Particular congratulations to Lucy Vineberg and Sammy Annear who both scored maximum points with 3 PB's.

Swimmer of the Year

The competition for Swimmer of the Year is based on each swimmers performances throughout the year at club race nights, with a PB counting for 4 points, a near PB for 3, being within 1 second is worth 2 points and for each race entered 1 point is earned. Well done to all the swimmers last week - there were some terrific performances and it is already getting very crowded at the top of the table !

Following the race night on the 9th, the current "Top 5" standings are as follows:

BOYS: Sammy Annear 26, Tom Mahony 24 with Mitch Evans, Tui Ryder-Nuku on 22 and Jack Evans on 21.

GIRLS: Scarlet Clark 30 : Taneeka Johnston 24 : Lucy Vineberg 21 : Mia mahony 15 and Maddisen Gazal 11.

Note that the complete list is on our web site.

Membership fees

Membership fees for 2006/07 are now well overdue and swimmers who are not financial need to join or renew to swim this Friday or in this weekend's Speedo series. This is particularly the case for the swimmers participating at the Speedo Sprint series this weekend as it is an external meet. There are very serious insurance issues if a swimmer races in our club without being financial.

$50 is club membership for the full year to September 30, of which $26 goes to Swimming Aust for insurance and registration. If a swimmer has a mishap while competing or training for the club, and is not a financial member of the club then that swimmer is uninsured. It is in everyone's interests that the membership dues are paid. Accordingly we have to insist that each swimmer is paid up before being allowed to compete. Go to the website at www.cpswimclub.info to download the application form from the fees page. Failing that see Nish - the man behind the desk at race nights.
