| THE FIRST RACE NIGHT FOR 2007 IS ON THIS FRIDAY WEEK AT 6.30PM ! Welcome back everyone and all of us at the club hope you all had a relaxing and happy holiday break. Hopefully a little bit of swimming was undertaken ! The 2006 / 2007 long course season continues, and it was planned that the first of this (calendar) years races would happen this Friday. Unfortunately the centre has double booked the pool (Grammar have their carnival on the same night) and so we have had to move our start to 2007 to Friday week, February 9th. It will start at at 6.30pm. Please try and be there by 6.00pm so that we can get all the entries put into the computer in time for a 6.30 start - it will also give some time for the swimmers to do a bit of a warm up. The club had some outstanding results achieved by two of its senior swimmers over the Christmas holidays - details below - and a number of junior swimmers have trained so well they have been promoted - details also below in "Squad News".. There were also some fantastic results achieved at the club's last race night back in December and a full report is set out below. See you on Friday February 9th! |
| Swimmer of the Month - December 06 Congratulations to Taneeka Johnston! With all these PB's and records being broken at the december race night, winning the club's "Swimmer of the Month" is a huge achievement. Taneeka scored a perfect 12 points in December at only her second race night. Well done Taneeka! December Race Night At the December race night 12 PB's were set - congratulations to the following swimmers who performed so well ! Annexes Johnston (4) ; Lucy Vineburg (3) ; James Vineburg ; Scarlet Clark ; Sammy Annear ; Jack Evans and Mitch Evans. Well done team ! Speedo Sprint Series All swimmers 13 years and under should consider swimming in the Speedo Sprint series. This is a state-wide event and in the past the club has done very well in it. The format is regional heats followed by finals at SOPAC at Homebush. Entries are due in by 2nd Feb.. at the very latest so see Steve or Martin as soon as possible ! Payment for the Sprint Series needs to be made before entries are sent off!!! It is really a lot of fun and everyone should have a go at it ! Squad News The holiday intensive training was very encouraging in respect to attendance and effort. Well done to all the swimmers and a special THANK YOU to the Junior Coach Ilka Heilemann, who has contributed heaps since she has been in Australia and part of the coaching unit Once again congratulations to Tom Mahony, Jade Jowett-Crociani, Cameron Harkins, Emily Kass, Sam Annear and Popi Aldous, who have been asked by the head coach, Steve Garner, to join an advanced squad (and thus attend extra training) in recognition of their attendance, attitude and aptitude. Any other keen juniors need to apply to the head coach to determine if they are both ready and eligible to move up. As a rough guideline swimmers 11/ 12 years and under need to train 4/5 times every week and 13 years + need to attend 7 session per week. If sessions are missed they must be made up later that week or the following week. If the club is going to have swimmers achieving their dreams they must be serious with attitude, planning, commitment and execution. Attitude and progress will continually be monitored by the coaching staff. Attendance at selected carnivals will be mandatory for these swimmers as this is a crucial way to get racing experience and to get "match fit". These swimmers and the others in the advanced squad are being aimed at Winter Metropolitan and Winter (i.e. short course) State Championships. Club BBQ The barbeque will again be operating on Friday nights from 6.45pm, with the complimentary champagne, beer and wine again available to all parents and support crew. Remember that brothers and sisters of the swimmers have free entry so they can enjoy all the facilities of the centre, and have a delicious dinner, while the Race Squad battle out the point score placings! |
The Club has its first State Champion! Two of the club's senior swimmers, James Medway and Samantha Marshall, represented the club at the State Age Swimming Championships held at SOPAC in early January, and they both did the club proud. James swam a PB in the 14 years 100m backstroke and is now getting set by head coach, Steve Garner, to qualify for the National Age Championships being held in Perth in April. Congratulations also to Sam Marshall who won the club's first medal at State level by winning bronze in the 14 years 200m breastroke. The next day was the big one, being the 100m breastroke. A large contingent of Cook & Phillip supporters turned up to cheer Sam on. She was up against the defending champion, who is also the current National Age Champion, so there were a lot of nerves both at poolside and in the stands ! In a very close fought and exciting race Sam overcame a slowish start to lead at the turn. Twenty metres from home the defending champion came very close to taking the lead, but Sam fought back and won a thrilling victory. This was the culmination of almost a years planning by Head Coach, Steve Garner, and combined with the hard work put in by Sam, it all came up trumps. Well done Sam and Steve ! Metropolitan Championships Head coach, Steve Garner, reports as follows : "James Medway and Samantha Marshall recently competed in the Metropolitan Championships where they swam really well, especially as they were not tapered for the meet. James swam 1.08.5 (PB) in the 100 metre backstroke and we are hoping he can come down from there in the State Championships next weekend and the following week. Samantha won the (14yrs) 100 metre breastroke in 1.13.7 (fastest time in any age group), 2nd in the 200m (open) breastroke in 2.44. and 3rd in the 50 metre (open) breastroke in 34.7. These results backed onto her fantastic achievement at the Australian Open (World Championship Trials) in Brisbane in early December, where she made the Semi Finals and came 14th overall in the 100m breastroke."
